Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular calls from the official, echoing the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
