Why this Democratic Party is Hiding its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

The decision from the DNC to block the publication regarding its own autopsy report concerning the last presidential race is shocking but entirely predictable. Resistant to unpleasant candor, the party's leadership apparatus operates more like a communications shop rather than an electoral entity committed to cultivating a volunteer base capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Climate of Conformity

Hesitant to challenge the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the committee has stayed within the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Publishing the findings could have demonstrated that party leaders truly desire to promote public discourse about the strategic failures that paved the way for the former president to return to the White House. However, the leadership is moving forward as if there is little to be learned following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

The top priority: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it is an unnecessary diversion from our fundamental goal," a rationale which was presented to justify concealing the analysis.

Major Failures an Analysis Could Have Addressed

An autopsy report with any value would confront key points of failure. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: Losing among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the Democratic ticket in 2020 proved pivotal during the tight 2024 election.
  • The Choice to Run: The determined choice of the incumbent to seek re-election, and a very late step-aside, has been criticized as robbing Democratic voters of a genuine choice.
  • Abandoning Core Democratic Voters: Amid rising costs, the electoral effort is criticized for accommodating elite contributors while failing to confront the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Foreign Policy Impact: The failure to adjust an approach regarding a ongoing war reportedly led to losing key demographic groups, notably with youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Youth Support: Extensive evidence shows a significant drop-off in Democratic support from the youth electorate.

A History of Evasion

This refusal is consistent with a pattern of sidestepping difficult realities. It recalls a dynamic where nearly all Democratic officeholder in Congress acquiesced to a sitting president's insistence on seeking another term until a disastrous campaign event led to a change.

Meanwhile, large majorities within the party's base were repeatedly informing pollsters of their opposition to the incumbent to seek re-election.

Financial Issues

A substantive report could probe questions about campaign spending, including how much money flowed to party strategists and advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort that burned through a colossal amount over a few months.

A Underlying Problem

Ultimately, the suppression of the official autopsy highlights a submission toward the existing power structure who engineered a losing electoral effort. The signal for the party's base – including countless small donors – appears to be that they cannot have a right to see the lessons the leadership say they discovered based on an analysis based on feedback from all states.

An organization incapable to critically review its mistakes is unlikely to climb out of the rut which was so advantageous to the winning candidate.
