The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
