Bolsonaro taken into custody after being declared a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
