At least thirteen people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
